TAHA KEHAR'S WORD/S CHOICE: HEATHCLIFF, MAGICAL
DEFINED AS: 

I once wrote a poem about the arcane matters of the heart. A friend who was taken by the quirky, meandering quality of the piece told me it was magical but too dark for public consumption. 

'It's the kind of poem Heathcliff would have written for Catherine,' he said. 'Water it down. Think Devdas, not Heathcliff. What would Devdas have written for Paro if he'd resorted to poetry rather than drink?'

Though I was perplexed by his suggestion, I wrote another poem that decimated my inner Heathcliff and opened a doorway for the Devdas buried deep within the recesses of my soul. My friend didn't relish the finished product. Bereft of Heathcliff's intensity, the poem lost its verve, its realistic touch. 

'Maybe Devdas was better off as a lovelorn drunkard,' he said. 

As I read both poems, I realise that they embody separate, conflicting strands of love. Each poems carries a different secret, mines a different vein of truth.

'Maybe Devdas and Heathcliff should have been poets,' I tell myself.
